HYDERABAD: What’s a zoo without a giraffe! The Nehru Zoological Park did without one for the last 20 years. Not anymore. The Hyderabad zoo finally got a giraffe on Wednesday. Peddi Reddi Ramachandra Reddy, Minister for Forests and Environment did the honours. A pair of blue and yellow macaws and red jungle fowl were also released.
The giraffe is named ‘Tsunami Basant’ and was born on February 13, 2005 in the Delhi Zoo. The name is on account of its birthday falling on Basant Panchami day after the Boxing Day Tsunami of December 2004.
It was brought from Delhi under a mutually agreed animal exchange programme between the National Zoological park in Delhi and the Hyderabad zoo. IN exchange, a pair of Asiatic Lions and four pairs of pheasants were sent to the Delhi zoo.
The transportation of Tsunami Basant was a herculean task. A 13-foot high crane costing Rs 1.25 lakh was specially designed for the purpose. The animal was loaded onto a low bed truck on July 25 and transported 1,700 km over six days from Delhi to Hyderabad accompanied by zoo officials. The team arrived in Hyderabad on July 31.
The moment the entourage entered Hyderabad city limits they coordinated with APTransco officials to remove overhead power lines along the route.
