For nearly a week now, a rogue reptile has evaded capture at Cravens Park. Arlington animal control officers have tried various methods to catch a 5-foot alligator, from tempting it with a roadkill treat to tearing down a beaver dam to drain the pond at the southeast Arlington park where it has been spotted swimming. Students at nearby Bebensee Elementary reported the gator, a rare sighting in Arlington, to school officials April 30. Mike Bass, assistant director of community services, said the city's efforts have occasionally been hampered by the media and crowds who have gathered for a gator sighting, only to scare it away.

"Every time he feels imposed upon, he goes below the water," Bass said. "These guys can stay under for up to six hours." Once the gator is humanely captured, it will be released at the Fort Worth Nature Center and Refuge.
