A local council has been criticised after its workers painted a double yellow line over the body of a dead hedgehog.

The new road markings had been painted on the streets in Hartlepool, County Durham, ahead of the three-day Tall Ships Races festival, Sky News reports.

Allison Hart, 37, said: "I couldn't believe it when I saw the hedgehog - it's disgraceful.

"Workmen spent the day knocking on doors to get people to move their cars so they could draw the yellow lines.

"All they had to do was kick it with their foot so it was out of the way and then put it in a plastic bag and move it."

A Hartlepool Borough Council spokeswoman said: "Contractors have done a phenomenal amount of line painting in and around the town in preparation for the Tall Ships Races.

"They have done an exceptional job. This is obviously an unfortunate incident, but it was the only one reported during the massive project."
