Tree frog jumps out of crate of supermarket bananas

This frog made it from South America to Lymington
RSPCA called to Waitrose in Lymington

2:00pm Monday 17th January 2011

SUPERMARKET staff got a surprise when a frog hopped out of a bunch of bananas.

The stripy creature, believed to be a non-venomous South American tree frog, was discovered at Waitrose in Lymington on Saturday as the fruit was being unloaded on to the shelves.

Staff managed to capture the frog and called the RSPCA. RSPCA inspector Graham Hammond collected the frog which was “fit and well” despite its ordeal. Mr Hammond said: “Thankfully staff discovered it and managed to contain it in a tub. It is a beautiful little thing. We sometimes get spiders but it’s the first time we’ve ever had a tree frog.”

The inspector added that he will be looking after the frog temporarily until it can be found a new home.
