A man was left startled after he found a mountain lion making himself at home in his garage.
Father-of-five Jesse Taylor, of Hesperia, Southern California, came face to face with the lion after hearing strange noises coming from the garage on Tuesday morning.
Suspecting only a raccoon or a smaller animal hiding in there, he searched around only to find a large paw and a lion’s face staring back at him.
Wife Michelle Taylor thought that the animal - which police told Yahoo! News was only 18-months-old - had been hiding there since Saturday.
Local newspaper, the Victorville Daily Press reported residents of the town, located 80 miles north east of Los Angeles, claim that they had seen the large cat roaming around the neighbourhood.
Mr Taylor explained to the newspaper how he came to find the lion: “I pulled a bucket down off the top shelf and I saw a big paw print. Then I knew that it wasn’t a raccoon problem.”
The police arrived along with animal control to lure it out of the garage.
Once the animal was seized two hours later, it was tranquilised by wildlife experts.
Speaking with Yahoo! News, a spokeswoman from San Bernadino County Sheriff’s Office said: “The lion wasn’t trapped. It went into the garage on his own free will. When the homeowner discovered it, he immediately closed the door back up and called us.”
She added that Mr Taylor had done the right thing to get out of the garage and shut the door.
The male lion was found healthy with no injuries and later released in the San Bernadino Forest.
