IF it wasn't for saviour Shelley Hayward, this tiny eight-week-old ball of fluff would be in animal heaven.

The cat breeder was at home playing with her healthy but heavily pregnant ragdoll cat, Ruby, 2, before she briefly had to leave the room.

When Ms Hayward returned, Ruby was having a fit.

"I performed mouth-to-mouth. I had no option. I tried to get her heart going. It got to the point when I had to give up," she said.

When the cat died, Ms Hayward could see the kittens moving. "The kittens were not getting the oxygen supply they needed," she said. "I had to find a way to get in there."

With no veterinary training and more than one hour from the nearest vet, Ms Hayward had no time to waste.

Having grown up on a farm, she got out her cat breeder's delivery kit, which included a scalpel and scissors.

"I could see the kittens moving and they were getting less and less (active), so I knew any longer and they wouldn't be with us," she said.

Working as quickly as possible, Ms Hayward managed to get all six kittens out alive. Sadly, two died days later.

"I look at them every single day and can't believe it ... they must be such little fighters," she said.

Ms Hayward, 33, said she planned to keep two of the four, Kiara and Kuroneko.

"Getting rid of Moe and Rosey is going to be devastating," she said. "All I ask is they go to wonderful homes and have happy and healthy lives."
