Greenland is melting. NASA scientists say they are astonished at how fast its ice sheet is thawing. During just this month, three independent satellites found that in the course of a week the amount of thawed surface ice sheet went from 40 percent to 97 percent — a phenomenon that hasn’t been seen in 30 years of observations. Said a flabbergasted Son Nghiem of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory: “This was so extraordinary that at first I questioned the result: Was this real or was it due to a data error?" Researchers say global warming is largely to blame; warmer ocean waters are eating away at the ice.
