South Africa losing 18 rhinos a week – 277 so far in 2014

South Africa has released the latest figures for rhino poaching. With 15 weeks gone of 2014 the total number of rhino poached in the country has reach 277. The average weekly figure is slightly down on the average of 20 rhino killed a week in 2013.

The Kruger National Park continues to take the brunt of the killings with little change in the rate of poaching since last year. Kruger is currently losing and average of 11.06 rhino a week compared to an average of 11.6 rhino a week in 2014.

Eastern Cape province has seen 6 rhinos killed so far this year – already a higher figure than last year when a total of 5 rhino were killed by poachers in the region.
