Australian foxes are pests not pets, NSW declares

Foxes have been officially declared a pest in New South Wales but there is concern people are taking them as pets.

The NSW government has for the first time announced a pest control order for foxes, which are not native to Australia.

The order will make it easier for local land services to target foxes and to control who keeps them in captivity.

Foxes are estimated to be responsible for about A$227.5m (£121m) of damage to Australia's environment and economy.

"The introduction of the pest control order brings NSW into line with all other states in Australia in ensuring that foxes must be controlled by landholders on their properties," said NSW Minister for Primary Industries Katrina Hodgkinson.

"Foxes are not companion animals - this pest control order sends the clear message that they are pests, not pets," she said.

"Foxes cause extensive damage for livestock producers, with studies showing lamb losses to fox predation can be as high as 30%."

Wildlife 'devastated'
People who currently keep foxes in captivity will have to apply for a permit.

American pests develop resistance to ‘deadly’ toxins in GM maize – research

Genetically modified corn, which produces anti-pest toxin, is no longer as efficient at killing the bugs. The resistance arose quickly, due to some extent, to farmers avoiding the simple, but profit-cutting precaution of crop rotation.

The problem that may soon render null the economic and environmental benefits of GM maize, which produces the so-called Bacillus thurinigiensis (Bt) toxin, was highlighted in a study published online in this week’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. 

In the paper, a team led by Aaron Gassmann, an entomologist at Iowa State University in Ames, described the rise in some Iowa fields of a bug called the western corn rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera). 

The studied pest has developed resistance to two of three types of Bt toxins currently available on the market. 

The vulnerability of GM corn could lead to disastrous consequences for farmers and the environment, Gassmann warned. 

“Unless management practices change, it’s only going to get worse,” he said. “There needs to be a fundamental change in how the technology is used.”

NY city's dead skunk depot stinks up neighborhood

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Residents of a Buffalo, N.Y., neighborhood plagued by skunk odors now know what caused the stink: Trapped critters that were shot and stored at a shuttered police station.

The Buffalo News reports (http://bit.ly/18myscv ) that the city's public works commissioner confirmed Monday that humanely trapped skunks have been taken to an old police station in South Buffalo, where they're shot and stored in outdoor freezer until they can be incinerated.

Residents say they complained about the smell months ago but were told by city officials that skunks weren't being killed inside the building. Later, they were told only a few skunks were killed there by lethal injection.

One neighborhood leader has dubbed the community scandal "Skunkgate."

City officials say they're looking for new locations for dispatching the nuisance skunks.

Caterpillars Build Leaf 'Houses,' Other Insects Move In

Leaf-rolling caterpillars, widely considered pests in many parts of the world, actually play a crucial role in forest ecosystems by building shelters used by hundreds of other insect species, a new study says.

Caterpillars of the genus Anaeaare the larvae of leafwing butterflies (so named because their wings mimic dead leaves). They protect themselves while caterpillars by rolling themselves up in a leaf — like rolling a cigar. They secure the leaf with a bit of silk they produce.
But these caterpillars aren't just building temporary shelters for themselves, it turns out.

Pest Uses Plant Hairs for Protection: Trichomes Save Insect from Beetle Predation


Feb. 5, 2013 — Everyone needs to eat. But it's a dog-eat-dog world, and with the exception of the top predators, everyone also gets eaten. To cope with this vicious reality, a tiny insect that eats plants has learned to employ the plant's hairs for physical protection from its beetle predator.

The pest is called the cycad aulacaspis scale, and its invasion into numerous countries in recent years has caused immeasurable loss of biodiversity. Cycads belong to an ancient lineage of plants that date to the dinosaur era, and the pest requires a cycad plant for food. The insect's recent invasion to the island of Guam has endangered the island's endemic cycad species. Local biologists introduced a voracious beetle predator to the island to eat the scale insects, but the plant damage by the pest has persisted.

"We began looking into the reasons that the beetle was failing to control the pest, and discovered that the pest could crawl between the plant's trichomes to reach its feeding sites," said UOG Professor Thomas Marler. Trichomes are what biologists call the hairs that can be found on many plant leaves and stems. Unfortunately, the much larger beetle predator could not make the same journey through the trichomes to feed on the scale insects that were feeding on the plant beneath the trichomes.

Plant hairs serve several functions, and one of those functions is to protect the plant from insects. "The glitch in this situation was that the insect that was excluded by the plant hairs was our beneficial insect that eats the scale pest, and the insect that could just walk straight through the hairs was the very pest we wished to control," said Marler.

Honey-bees found to have bite that stuns

Honey-bees are known for their sting, but scientists have now discovered they can also bite.

Bees resort to biting when faced with pests, such as parasitic mites, that are too small to sting.



Close study of the biting behaviour has revealed that they secrete a chemical in their bite that stuns pests so they are easier to eject from a colony.
Tests suggest the chemical could also have a role in human medicine, as a local anaesthetic.

Dr Alexandros Papachristoforou, a biologist at Greece's Aristotle University of Thessaloniki told the BBC honey-bees had previously been seen dealing with pests that lived alongside them in colonies but this had always thought to be part of their grooming behaviour.
"Everybody thought that was it. Full stop," Dr Papachristoforou said. "But that's not the case. It's something totally different and was just there and we could not see it.
"I think we know too many things about the pathology of honey bees," he said. "We are still missing a lot of basic knowledge on their biology and behaviour."
The pests that honey-bees bite include varroa mites as well as wax moth larvae.

Another New Zealand island cleared of introduced pests

4th island in Dusky Sound given the all clear
August 2012. The Fiordland Conservation Trust and former Fiordland business owners Ruth Dalley and Lance Shaw, with help from a range of supporting funders, have successfully eradicated rats and mice, the last remaining pests on Indian Island in Dusky Sound.


The 170 ha Island near the outer edge of Dusky Sound is the fourth of six main islands in Dusky Sound to have a predator control programme to remove introduced mammals.
Pest control on Indian Island first began in 2000 when the Department of Conservation established a successful stoat and deer eradication programme. Resident mice and rats however remained on the Island until Fiordland Ecology Holidays and their extensive network came to the rescue in 2010. The group included one major off shore benefactor, along with generous contributions from Lucy Bellerby, Ian and Jenny Willans and Ultimate Hikes. This team of people have continued to be involved in the project assisting with establishing and checking traps and tracking tunnels over the two year period.
Rat, mice and stoat free
Since the eradication, not a single mouse, rat or stoat has been captured in the traps, which means that the island is now considered to be predator free. Ms Dalley and Mr Shaw said they were delighted to hear this news and will remain involved as surveillance continues.
Ms Dalley said that prior to selling their business 'Fiordland Ecology Holidays' they wanted to 'thank' Fiordland for 16 years of running tourism, media and scientific research trips. Through their business they set up a fund to support research. This was financed through donations from passengers and from a percentage of their annual income. This is the fourth island in Fiordland that they have been financially and logistically involved in with the eradication of pests.
Fiordland Conservation Trust Chairman Murray Willans said it is a real privilege to be involved in this project in a very special part of New Zealand. He acknowledges that like any island pest eradication, this project will require ongoing pest surveillance.

Hawaii Invasive Species: Cargo And Passenger Inspectors Cut In Recent Years – via Herp Digest


HONOLULU (AP) 04/12/2012— Cuts in the number of inspectors who check cargo and passengers entering Hawaii have some worried that more pests will get established in a state that is especially vulnerable because of its tropical weather and few natural predators.

Hawaii has a history of non-native animals and bugs that established a foothold and then spread like wildfire, from the mongoose, a weasel-like animal native to India, that has helped drive native birds to the brink of extinction, to a beetle from Central Africa that is destroying prized Kona coffee crops.
In the past few years, Hawaii has made big cuts to its team of inspectors who check shipping containers and keep an eye on tourists' luggage. The number of inspectors fell from 95 people in 2009 to 50 last year. Since then, a few additional positions have been filled, but there hasn't been enough money to come close to previous staffing levels.
Such inspections are vital in Hawaii because once creatures get established in the state, they thrive in the subtropical warmth and can cause extensive damage to farms and the environment. Often, they have little to fear from species native to Hawaii that evolved in isolation and lack natural defenses against their alien counterparts.
"It's paradise. Pests love it. Everybody does well here," said Christy Martin, a spokeswoman for the Coordinating Group on Alien Pests Species, made up of government and private organizations.
State Rep. Clift Tsuji has been leading efforts in the Legislature to boost funding for the state Department of Agriculture's inspector program, arguing that "reducing inspectors make us more vulnerable."
Already, it appears the decline in inspectors has resulted in fewer pests being found at airports and harbors.
State Department of Agriculture data shows 663 pests were intercepted on Oahu between July and December of 2009 — before the cuts. During the same six months of 2010, only 87 pests were found.
The inspectors focus primarily on cargo because there's a greater risk an invasive species will be hiding in a shipment of goods than in a traveler's suitcase.
Officials said the drop in inspections could be troublesome for farmers, forests and even human health.
Warren Watanabe, executive director of the Maui County Farm Bureau, said farmers will have to spend more money on research to fight new pests, and then on spraying or other methods to combat them.
Maui is known for its sweet onions, but farmers there also grow zucchini, tomatoes, cabbage and other crops. Pests could even affect cattle farmers at a time when Maui ranchers are already fighting fireweed, a herb that's toxic to livestock.
"Anything that will add to the cost of production is a very big concern because it puts us at a competitive disadvantage," Watanabe said.
In Kona, on the Big Island, coffee farmers have had to spend hundreds of dollars per acre to fight the coffee berry borer.
And officials in Hawaii are particularly worried about the brown tree snake — a reptile native to Australia and the Solomon Islands that has eaten to extinction 9 out of 11 species of forest birds on Guam since it was accidentally introduced there after World War II.
Another worry is that a plant pathogen native to Brazil may find its way into Hawaii in cut flower bouquets. The pathogen, called eucalyptus rust or guava rust, has shown up in Florida and California. It's a threat to ohia, a native tree that forms the foundation of Hawaii's forests.
Officials also are worried that mosquitoes that could carry malaria, dengue fever and other diseases could hop from one Hawaiian island to another or hitch a ride to the state from Asia or other parts of the world.
Some of these worries were realized in March when Department of Health workers found yellow fever mosquitoes — Aedes aegypti — in mosquito traps at Honolulu International Airport. The species, which is capable of rapidly spreading dengue and yellow fever, is only found on the Big Island and Molokai and hasn't been seen on Oahu since 1949.
Carol Okada, an Agriculture Department plant quarantine manager who heads the state's efforts to control invasive species, said there aren't enough inspectors to check for each species that authorities worry about.
"Do you look at florist boxes and forget the mosquito? And yet that's where we are at this point," she said. "Because you can't do it all. You have to choose."
Okada warns people would need to sleep with mosquito nets if a disease-carrying mosquito were to become established in Hawaii. Visitors would have to take shots or pills before coming to Hawaii, and some people could die of malaria, she said.
"For us, it's not reasonable for us to be threatened with something like that happening to Hawaii," Okada said.
The state Legislature is considering a proposal to give Okada's department $1.8 million in the upcoming budget so it can hire more inspectors. The number of inspectors wouldn't reach previous levels, but it would raise the number to 82 and cover nine Maui inspector salaries now financed temporarily with federal money.
She hopes political and public support could ultimately bring that number back to 95 inspectors, enabling the state to check cargo and baggage at all hours of the day and night. Until then, she said her agency will have to scramble.
"It's hard to manage — it's like always juggling 'what's going to be important today? And what do we give up today for that?'" she said.

Exotic beetle pest outbreak threatening UK broadleaved trees

An outbreak of the Asian longhorn beetle (ALB), an exotic beetle pest which could have severe consequences for British trees, has been found in Kent the Food and Environment Research Agency (FERA) have confirmed. This is the first time an outbreak of this pest has been found in the UK and it is being treated extremely seriously. Fera and the Forestry Commission are taking urgent steps to try to eradicate the outbreak before it has the chance to spread further afield.

Several larvae of the beetle have been found inside a poplar tree during a routine survey by the Forestry Commission at a site in the Paddock Wood area. Scientists from Forest Research had been monitoring an area around the site where an adult beetle had been found in 2009 and this is the first evidence of infestation. It is thought the beetles originated from wood packaging used to import stone from China at an adjacent industrial site.
Non native beetle
The beetle is not native to the UK, and poses a serious threat to a very wide range of broadleaved trees and shrubs such as maple (including sycamore), elm, horse chestnut, willow, poplar, birch and some fruit trees.
Speaking about action to eradicate the outbreak Martin Ward, Head of Plant Health Policy at Fera said, "Our Plant Health Inspectors and the Forestry Commission are conducting a survey to determine the extent of this outbreak. They will be contacting all those within the survey area over the next few days and weeks with a view to inspecting all potential host trees for signs of the beetle. In the meantime we would urge members of the public, local businesses and landowners to be on the alert for the beetle and let us know if they find anything.
Asian longhorn beetle description
Adult beetles are large (around 20 - 40 mm long), shiny black with variable white markings. Their antennae are particularly distinctive being much longer than their bodies (up to twice the body length) and are black with white/light blue bands. The larvae of the beetle feed undetected on the inside of the plant and can kill it or leave it weakened and susceptible to further pest and disease damage.
