Australian police say they have found human remains in a crocodile-infested swamp where an 11-year-old girl went missing on a swimming trip over the weekend.
The girl was last seen swimming with her younger sister and two friends in a creek at Black Jungle Swamp, a restricted area inside a crocodile-rich conservation reserve some 30 miles east of Darwin.
Northern Territory Police superintendent Michael Murphy said the water was high because of recent rain and the girl had swum out further than her friends when she disappeared.
One of her friends said she saw the girl resurface with a "horrified" look on her face before vanishing under the water once again.
That was the last time she was seen.
The children told police that they saw the head and tail of a crocodile "splash the surface" of the water near where the girl had vanished moments earlier, Mr Murphy said.
An initial search of the swamp failed to find the girl or the crocodile but police later found her shorts in the water about 70 yards from where she was last seen.
The incident is the second fatal attack in northern Australia in five weeks.
A five-year-old boy vanished from a river edge in northeastern Australia in February - his remains were later found in the stomach of a 14ft crocodile.
Crocodiles have become plentiful in Australia's tropical north since they became protected by federal law in 1971.
