They were procured from Visakhapatnam zoo in exchange for a pair of bison
PANAJI: Bondla zoo in north Goa added a pair of tigers to its animal collection last week.
The tigers were procured from Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, Visakhapatnam, in exchange for a pair of bison.
The Bondla zoo is a major tourist attraction in the coastal State.
The tigers, Rana (male) and Sandhya (female), brought on Saturday, will be quarantined for three weeks, according to conditions stipulated by the Central Zoo Authority, before being released into enclosures for public display, said officials of the Goa Forest Department on Tuesday.
“The animals will be put on display for the public in mid-August,” said Debandra Dalai, Deputy Conservator of Forests.
He disclosed plans to acquire a pair of bears from Nandankanan Zoological Park, Orissa, to further supplement the collection in the zoo.
“Tigers are considered to be at the apex of the food chain in the forest ecosystem, and as such their presence in the zoo has now made the collection appear complete,” Mr. Dalai said. The Bondla zoo, established in 1969, was recognised as a mini zoo and subsequently upgraded to the status of small zoo in 2006. Following the successful captive breeding of Indian Bison, the Bondla zoo has been recognised as the participatory zoo for bison breeding in the country.
