Caged birds a mystery on Gold Coast beach

28 July 2009

Four cages of budgerigars and finches, which may have belonged to a homeless person, have been found partially buried in sand on a Gold Coast beach (Australia).

Fire crews were putting out a scrub fire on The Spit at Main Beach yesterday when they discovered the large number of well-kept birds.

The RSPCA is trying to find the owner.

Spokesman Michael Beatty says it appears a homeless person was caring for the birds.
"They had fresh water they had adequate food," he said.

"Obviously someone had been trying to take good care of them, but as to how or why they got onto the beach at The Spit we just don't know."
