'Killer seaweed' may have poisoned driver

Tuesday, September 8, 2009

A deadly gas given off by seaweed may have killed a lorry driver who was transporting the material from a beach.

The noxious rotting sea lettuce has already resulted in a horse dying on the sands of Binic, Brittany, it's been reported.

It was initially thought the 48-year-old driver had died of a heart attack, but now worried investigators are carrying out a full-scale examination to establish if the seaweed was to blame.

Mayor Christian Urvoy told the Mirror: "We want to know if we should safeguard workers in future."

The excess seaweed is being put down to local farms putting too many chemicals into the soil.
