Mother bear saving stuck baby bear by snapping tree is YouTube hit
12th May, 2010
What do you do if your bear cub gets stuck up a tree? Answer – take matters into your own paws.
That’s what mummy bear Bjork did when her wayward three-month-old daughter scampered up a tree and could not, or would not, come down.
Mobile phone footage shows that, for a few seconds at least, she tried to reach up and gently coax her little one down from her perch 3.6m (12ft) off the ground.
But she lost patience and started violently shaking the sapling as Berna swung precariously above – tantalisingly out of reach.
After a slightly ungainly effort to climb up and grab her by the scruff of the neck, Bjork’s patience snapped ... and so did the tree.
She simply broke it in two, bringing Berna crashing back down to earth with a bump.
Meanwhile, her brother Urs watched from a safe distance.
The spectacle kept tourists enraptured at the bear park in Bern, Switzerland, and has become a YouTube sensation with 250,000 views.
