Volunteers To Count Pascagoula River Species

Inventory Will Be First Of Its Kind In South

10:05 am CDT September 21, 2010

MOSS POINT, Miss. -- The director of the Pascagoula River Audubon Center and some trained volunteers intend to count every living sprout, critter, bug and bird that calls the Pascagoula River home.

Center director Mark LaSalle said the Pascagoula River All-Taxa Biodiversity Inventory will be the first of its kind in the South.

LaSalle told The Sun Herald that the plan calls for six or seven scientist-led teams of volunteers to start in Jackson County at the first of the year and work their way up the river.

The Pascagoula River Basin covers about one-fifth of the surface area of Mississippi.

LaSalle said scientists will continually update a web-based database with the information.
