Eels given paths to help them get around Braunton

By NDJDuncan | Posted: August 05, 2014

EELS are finding it easier to get around Braunton Marshes thanks to a series of “paths” which have been laid out for them.

As part of the Government’s push to increase eel numbers across the UK, the Environment Agency worked with local farmers and the group which maintains Braunton Marshes to improve access for eels.

The recently completed routes are designed to assist elvers – immature eels – on their journey into the marshes’ freshwater where they mature and breed.

It is hoped the project will also help the otters and birds which eat them.
