A RARE mammal which is related to the weasle and is being re-introduced into Mid Wales has been labelled as a ‘terrible killing machine’.

John Pugh, trustee of Songbird Survival, fears an increase in the pine marten population will adversely impact on some bird species.

He said: “I have no hesitation, pine martins are a supreme killing machine. A terrible killing machine.

“We have got an all time low of ground nesting birds. It just does not match up with the real world introducing this killer to our eco-systems.

“With falling numbers we now have to put up with farming of pine martens in Mid Wales.”
