A WILD beaver has been killed by a car — and is believed to be the first run over in Britain.
The four-year-old female was struck by a motor after wandering on to a road during recent floods.
A wild beaver killed by a car near Langford Bridge, close to the River Otter in Devon, is thought to be the first run over in Britain
A member of the public found its body near Langford Bridge close to the River Otter in East Devon, where a pioneering wild breeding monitoring project is being carried out.
Devon Wildlife Trust had tagged her in 2015.
She was among the first found in the wild in England in 400 years.
Spokesman Steve Hussey said: “It is sad news. Beavers like to stick to water, or close to water, but they will also cross land and roads.
"Recent heavy rains and high river levels may have meant this beaver chose a land route rather than battle against the force of the river.
"And, like all wildlife, beavers are vulnerable when they cross our roads.”
