BOULDER, Colo. — A Boulder man was found dead in his home Friday morning, with his dog standing guard over his body.
Police spokeswoman Sarah Huntley said a man in his 50s, whose name has not yet been released, was found lying on the floor of his home in the area near Kalmia Avenue and Nottingham Court about 8:30 a.m.
The death does not appear suspicious, she said.
Neighbors apparently became concerned that the man's dog, Pepper, didn't howl Friday morning.
"The house was dark and Pepper was not howling," Huntley said. "Usually, when (the man) goes out, Pepper would howl and howl."
Neighbors called the man's family, and a relative who went to check on him found the body and the dog, Huntley said.
When officers arrived, they found the Australian cattle dog lying by its master's side. When police tried to enter the house, Pepper became aggressive and tried to protect the body, Huntley said.
Police dispatchers described the dog as "standing guard."
Officers were eventually able to wrangle Pepper into a bedroom, and animal control officers came to take the dog to a shelter. Huntley said the man's family will have to decide what to do with the loyal companion.
The Boulder County Coroner's Office has taken the body, Huntley said, and will try to determine the cause and manner of death.
