Short-legged pony sparks 999 calls

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

The next time pony Mayflower goes for a shoe fitting, she may want to think about getting high heels.

Four times in the past week, firefighters have been called out by concerned passers-by convinced the little creature is sinking fast in mud.

From afar, it looks as if Mayflower is stuck up to her knees – in actual fact she's just got stumpy legs.

Animal rescue expert Anton Phillips was dispatched to the field on the River Test, near Southampton, with 12 other firefighters to help the 71cm (2ft 4in) animal before they realised she was not in any distress.

'From 200 yards away, it does look like the pony is trapped in the mud,' said Mr Phillips.

'But when we get there, we can see very quickly what we were dealing with – a pony with short legs that looks like a dwarf.'

Owner Sandra Whitcher added: 'People are always phoning up and saying Mayflower has got stuck in mud when she's perfectly OK – she's just got short legs.

'We might have to put up a sign so passing motorists know the horse is not stuck.'
