Mice invade homes to escape cold in Toowoomba

NEAR freezing overnight temperatures are driving mice indoors with Toowoomba residents on the Darling Downs rushing outlets that sell traps.

One hardware salesman sold 60 on Friday to home owners who said there had been a noticeable increase in mice numbers over the past three weeks.

In that period, the mercury fell as low as -1C and there were only two occasions when the maximum was above 20 in the Darling Downs centre. One resident said a $15 trap he bought on Friday had caught five mice that night, three on Saturday and four on Sunday.

The problem was getting rid of the mice.

"I drown them," he said.

Increased mice populations are common in winter, when the cold sends them in search of warmth and when crops are close to harvest.
Earlier this year, an aged resident of a Dalby nursing home was bitten by the vermin as he lay in bed.
