Black panther back on the prowl...
Published: 02 September, 2010
TWO sightings of a large panther-like cat in the Dornoch and Tain area have been reported to police.
A strange animal was spotted prowling between Dornoch caravan and camping site and the greenkeeper's shed at Royal Dornoch Golf Club at around 8am last Saturday.
Another member of the public reported what they described as a "very large, muscular black cat with a square head" in the Fendon area of Tain last Thursday.
The animal was estimated to be around four feet in length with a two to three-foot long tail.
Northern Constabulary has urged anyone who spots such an animal not to approach it, but to contact the police. They are the first big cat sightings in East Sutherland for a few years.
In 2004 a cat-like creature was thought to be prowling round Durness following a reported sighting and the discovery of large paw prints. A rash of big cat sightings was reported at the Mound and in the Skelbo area in 2003.
At the time, retired police detective John Catchcart of Inverness, who had a special interest in such sightings, said: "A black panther is totally alien in these parts and its existence would be scoffed at by experts.
"However, all these people who are reporting sightings cannot be wrong."
