The Great Moscow Circus had been featuring the fish regurgitation as part of its current show in Sydney - but now the New South Wales Department of Industry and Investment has stepped in to stop it, after members of the public complained.
The department said that swallowing the fish breached the Animals Protection Act. 'Circuses operating in NSW must comply with prescribed standards for the welfare of animals,' they said in a statement.
The decision was welcomed by animal rights campaigners. 'Far from educational, this was an inhumane and foolish act which reflected badly on the Moscow Circus,' said Animals Australia executive director Glenys Oogjes in a statement.
A spokesman for the Great Moscow Circus said the manager was too busy on Wednesday, Thursday and possibly Friday to comment.
