U.K. man collects 20,000 bird ornaments

PLYMOUTH, England, April 5 (UPI) -- A British man with more than 20,000 bird statues, paper weights, pictures and thimbles said he spends about 2 hours a day managing his collection.

Lawrence Cobbold, 38, said he spends 2 hours each day cleaning and rearranging his collection, which has filled his three-bedroom house in Plymouth, England, to the point where he has to eat and store his clothes at his parents' house, The Sun reported Thursday.

"It's turned into an obsession. I just want to show where my money goes and I like looking at them," said Cobbold, who said it isn't unusual for him to spent hundreds of dollars during a single trip to a thrift store or other sale. "What I pay for them and what they're worth to me are two different things."

Cobbold said his love of birds came from his father, Tony, 60, who used to keep live birds.

Tony Cobbold said he supports his son's hobby.

"We're encouraging him as much as telling him off. It's harmless, it's not like he does drugs," he said. "My other son is completely normal -- he won't have any ornaments at all in his house."
