THE Mamanuca Environment
Society (MES) has reported a significant increase in the number of turtle
sightings so far this year.
MES project manager Betani
Salusalu said recent research conducted in the Mamanuca Group revealed a major
change in the nesting behaviour of the sea creatures.
"The traditional nesting
session for sea turtles in Fiji is from October to April but the trend has
changed in the Mamanucas this year. We have noticed that nesting has continued
throughout the year.
"Some of the nesting
sites like South Sea Island, Vomo Island, Tavarua Island and Monuriki Island
are still experiencing hatchlings even though it's the nesting session,"
he said.
Mr Salusalu said the increased
sightings and change in nesting meant their turtle project worked.
