Australian Government fails Great Barrier Reef again

January 2014: Australian and Queensland Governments are failing to act on the World Heritage Committee’s major concerns about the Great Barrier Reef says new report.

Last year UNESCO’S World Heritage Committee made a series of recommendations on improving management of the Reef and asked the Australian Government to show progress by 1 February 2014, or otherwise risk having the site listed as World Heritage in Danger.

Yet with less than two days to go to the committee’s deadline it appears little progress has been made. WWF-Australia and the Australian Marine Conservation Society have released a 72 page report that shows the Australian and Queensland Governments have failed to make “good progress or completed” any of the seven recommendations the World Heritage Committee made.
