Australia bans importation of rhino body parts

Australian trophy hunters are to be banned from bring their prized rhino horns and body parts gained from overseas hunting trips back home ABC News have reported.

Many people travel to Africa with the purpose of hunting big game, such as rhinoceroses and lions, in a controlled and confined area from where they cannot escape.

This is often referred to as canned hunting and involves animals that have been habituated to human contact and are usually unafraid, making them easy targets for a bullet or an arrow.

But now thanks to the ban Australia's Federal Government has issued, Australian hunters will be unable to bring their so-called trophies, or rather rhino body parts, back into the country on their return.

"It's just not right at this time in history that we are allowing endangered species to be brought back as trophies into Australia," Environment Minister Greg Hunt told ABC.
