Watch: How turtles outsmart sharks

Footage has emerged showing how a turtle moved its body to evade the jaw of a hungry tiger shark.

The video shows how the clever reptile turns on its side to make itself too big for the prowling predator's mouth.

To help confuse the shark even more, the turtle swims in circles that are too tight for the larger shark to catch it.

The fascinating footage was shot off the Cocos Islands, off Costa Rica, by scientist Randall Arouz.

Randall, from Florida, US, said: "The turtles have to have certain strategies to avoid being eaten.
