WHEN newborn piglet Paulinchen was rejected by her mother, her future looked bleak.

The tiny runt of the litter was on the brink of starvation when a maternal dog came along and her saved her bacon.

Smaller than her siblings, the little Vietnamese pot-bellied pig was left behind by her real mum.

Roland Adam, 54, discovered the two-week-old abandoned piglet on his farm in Hoerstel, Germany after hearing her cries. She was cold, shaking, and moments from death.

He took her home and placed her in the care of the family dog, Katjinga.

Luckily the eight-year-old Rhodesian ridgeback immediately felt an outpouring of motherly affection for her new surrogate offspring.

In fact she took her mothering duties so seriously she even fed the wrinkly little piglet her own milk.

"If I hadn't heard its whining, probably the fox would have caught it," said Roland. "[The dog] loved the piglet at first sight and cares about it in the way she did for her own puppies," he added.
