Wall saves newts from life down in the dumps

A NEW £63,000 wall aims to prevent great crested newts living in a tip.

Redcar and Cleveland Council has erected the wall to keep newts out of its Household Waste and Recycling Centre at Dunsdale, between Redcar and Guisborough.

The newts are a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.

They are also included as a species in the Tees Valley Biodiversity Action Plan.

So it’s probably not in anyone’s interests for them to be wandering among the refuse trucks.
The recycling centre was only allowed by the Environment Agency and English Nature on condition a fence and tunnel were provided to keep the newts off the site, and give them safe passage through it.

It was originally planned replace the deteriorating old fencing at a cost of £95,000. But after a suggestion by Natural England, a cheaper wall has been installed instead.

Paid for by the council’s Risk Management Fund, the wall has an “overhang” so any climbing newts fall back into their safe haven. The council says the wall also improves the area around the centre.

Cabinet member for the environment, Councillor Sylvia Szintai said: “We feel we have responded proactively.” A newt crossing point has been installed beneath the road.
