Bee swarm can't stop Mexico qualifying

October 11, 2009

Mexico has defeated El Salvador 4-1 to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, becoming the first football team from the North American (CONCACAF) region to book a spot.

The game was halted just three minutes in, however, due to a swarm of bees inside the visitors' goal.

The match was stopped for more than six minutes while officials sprayed the area around the goalposts of El Salvador keeper Miguel Montes to clear the bees.

Salvadoran Marvin Gonzalez netted an own goal for the only tally of the first half but Mexico's Cuauhtemoc Blanco found the net in the 70th minute to ease the worries at Estadio Azteca.

Mexico's Francisco Palencia made it 3-1 for the hosts in the 84th minute before Julio Martinez pulled one back for the Salvadorans in the 87th minute.

Carlos Vela boosted Mexico's final margin back to three in the 90th minute.
