Hedgehog beds down in Dersingham spare room!

AN INTRUDER who sneaked into a Dersingham home was caught red-handed after falling asleep on the premises.

Householder Helen Hooker discovered the interloper – an adventurous young hedgehog – curled up in the middle of a bed in her spare room.

The surprisingly sprightly creature had first mounted an eight-inch step to gain access to the kitchen of the bungalow in Clayton Close.

After crossing into the hallway, crawling into the spare bedroom and clambering up a bedspread, it found it had discovered the perfect spot for a nap.

Mrs Hooker came upon the slumbering youngster by chance and said: "It was only a baby.

"It was so sweet and comical-looking, all snuggled up in the middle of the bed."

Young "Spike" also managed to escape the attention of Mrs Hooker's pet dog, Honey, who likes to keep an eye on the activities of hedgehogs at the bottom of the garden.

She said: "I've told Honey before not to bring her friends in. I had a word with her and asked her if she knew anything about it but she was saying nothing."

After returning the hedgehog to its natural habitat – with a snack of dog food to provide sustenance – Mrs Hooker began to wonder how long it had been an unofficial lodger.

She discovered droppings and chew marks behind her settee and said: "I use a hedgehog doorstop to keep the back door open. I reckon that was as good as a 'hedgehogs this way' sign."
