Mysterious signs warning of poisonous snakes have sprung up at a dogging hotspot - apparently in a bid to deter people from alfresco sex.
They say adders lurk near the spot in East Horndon, Essex, bemusing residents who have never seen a snake in the area.
The sign reads: 'Warning!! Poisonous Snakes. Adder's are about!' (Grocer's apostrophe sign-writer's own.) It also features a cartoon of a person encountering a snake.
Residents believe that the signs are actually there to deter people searching for sex - the area is named as a cruising ground on several websites, and is littered with used condoms.
The county council is trying to discover who put them up.
