Rhino Deaths Spark Sit-in Protest Against Assam Forest Department
September
2012. Following the brutal killing of four rhinos in Kaziranga National
Park, Assam, Aaranyak, the conservation NGO supported by the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, organised a day long sit-in protest on October 1st.
In
their statement Aaranyak said: "Many of you will be aware of the
unprecedented situation prevailing in the state of Assam following the
serial poaching and gruesome killing of four rhinos in Kaziranga
National Park. Aaranyak is deeply shocked and anguished at this most
unfortunate development, which has not only caused a tremendous setback
in the conservation efforts in the state but has also put the entire
state to shame because of the inability of the concerned authorities to
protect one of our most valuable animals; an animal that symbolises the
heritage and the pride of the state of Assam.
