Vietnam seizes over 1 tonne of ivory

Vietnam has made a major seizure of ivory as it entered the country yesterday. Over 1 tonne of elephant tusks were hidden in a container marked as charcoal. It is thought that the ivory made its way to Hai Phong via Hong Kong.

The tusks arrived at the port in a 40 foot container that had been certified as containing 15 tonnes of charcoal. When the shipment was inspected customs officers found the tusks, which had been sliced up into piece, hidden in the bags of charcoal.

Hai Phong customs officials are investigating the shipment which had been declared as belonging to Du Huong Commercial and Construction in Mong Cai City.

Ivory trading has been banned in Vietnam since 1992.
