British Prawns and Shrimps in Britain Being Affected By Prozac

Experts revealed that the shrimps and prawns in the UK are getting high on anti-depressants, due to the increasing amount of drug waste present in the coastal waters, around the country.

The Sun reports that many medicines like Prozac are being thrown in the sea close to the towns through waste water. Consequently, the behavior of marine life is being affected.

Researchers at Portsmouth University administered the similar levels of fluoxetine, which was found in the waste water. Fluoxetine is the agent present in Prozac. Dr. Alex Ford disclosed that it is not shocking to know that pharmacy wastes contaminate the water bodies.

The tests disclosed that when sea animals are affected with the drugs, they are five times more prone to swim up to light. Therefore, the crustaceans are at increased risk of being eaten by birds or fish and consequently, their number will decrease.

Dr. Alex said that these crustaceans are essential for the food chain. He further added that the alterations in their behavior could considerably affect the ecological balance.

The use of anti-depressant has increased in the recent years, as physicians in Wales and England recommend more than 26 million such drugs per year.
